Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has called out management of the FA for sacking coach CK Akunnor as Black Stars head.
According to John Paintsil, the the decision was premature and rushed.
John Paintsil thinks CK Akunnor would have achieved great success if he was given more time to prove his capabilities. He also revealed that CK Akunnor was on the right path with the team so his sacking comes as a disappointment to the whole football governing body.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s ‘Eyewitness News’, Paintsil affirmed that CK Akunnor was treated unfairly considering his efforts so far to qualify the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The former Fulham defender opined:
“It’s not a nice feeling, because when it happens to a coach, it’s as if it happened to all of us. However, this is the nature of a coach’s job; sometimes you get off to a good start, and sometimes you get off to a bad start.”
“I would say it is unfortunate; this is not the right time for him; he should have been given more time to work on the team”.
He continued “When you look at his statistics and what he’s done, it’s clear that he arrived at the wrong time and didn’t get enough time to camp the players before most of the games.
“It is very disappointing for me.”
Charles Akunnor was appointed as coach of the senior national team in January 2021 after the axing of James Kwesi Appiah from the team as coach.
In his 10 games as head coach of the Stars, he has won 4, lost 4 and drew 2. This resulted in his sacking after the Ghana Football Association reviewed his performance card after the recent loss to South Africa in a FIFA World Cup qualifying game.
CK Akunnor was sacked alongside two of his assistants and has since expressed his gratitude to the nation and President Akuffo Addo for giving him the opportunity to serve as head coach his motherland.
