Mexico’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Arturo Zaldivar has ruled out laws against abortion in the country.
Abortion is currently illegal in all excluding 4 states in the country except in cases of rape or where the mother’s life is in danger.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the Northern State of Coahuila that making abortion a crime was unconstitutional and should be removed from it criminal codes.
According to information reaching Ghana Africa News the ruling will affect the whole country, allowing women in state where abortion is illegal to undergo procedures with judge’s order.
The decision does not automatically make abortion legal across Mexico, experts said, but sets a binding precedent for judges across the country.
Executive Director of GIRE, Rebeca Ramos reproductive rights advocate said they planned to use the ruling to challenge laws in majority of Mexico’s states that mandate either jail time or other penalties for women who have an abortion.
they describe the decision as “Historic Ruling”.
“We are absolutely ready to present legal challenges to the denial of safe and legal abortion across the country.” she said.
However, women across Mexico over the years protested and demand not only abortion rights but also an end to the violence against women in the country.
The decision follows a number of major wins by supporters of reproductive rights in Mexico, who helped legalize abortion in the states of Oaxaca, Hidalgo and Veracruz and in Mexico City.
